Safety Officer
This course is designed to support the development of knowledge and skills to meet the training needs of Safety Officers on an incident as outlined by NWCG’s position standards. This course can also provide additional knowledge and skills for Operation Section Chiefs and Incident Commanders.
Students will learn the concepts, application, and tools for operational and strategic risk-based decisions on incidents. Students will understand the roles and responsibilities of a Safety Officer on an incident including the requirements of OSHA regulations. Students will demonstrate the ability to assess risk and deliver safety messaging to affect the quality of decisions made by incident personnel.

This course will incorporate Incident Risk Management for the first two days of class. You will need to review the Incident Risk Management pre-work in advance of attending the course.
The Intent of this prework is to create a foundation with risk-based decision making in the context of wildland firefighting. The prework should prepare the student for the concepts that will be discussed in class as well as demonstrate the difficulties involved with factoring probability into our decision-making. The objective of the class will be to provide the knowledge and tools to increase decision quality through simple and valuable means.
